Spring is almost here!  The crocus are up soon, trees will be budding and daffodils will be blooming. 
 
There is lots to do at Wintergreen, in every season.  Enjoy a relaxing spa weekend, go for a hike with the family, or play a few rounds of golf.  Tour one of Nelson County's nine wineries or two breweries.  Spend a day browsing through our numerous antique shops.

17 - Rural Health Outreach Program's  "A Spring Garden Party" at Wintergreen Winery, Nellsyford from 6:30-9:30 pm. Food, local brews & wines,  entertainment, silent and live auctions. 434-361-0362

18 - Piney River Mini Triathlon. Run 1.5 miles alongside the beautiful Piney River. Paddle .76 mile on the Piney River’s Class II rapids. Bike 2.5 miles – ¾ mile up Old Rose Mill Road alongside Piney River and 1.75 miles up the Blue Ridge Railway Trail.  Mountain bikes recommended. Individual or team entry. 18 - Oakland The Nelson County Museum of History presents Hurricane Camille authors, Warren Raines and Earl Swift. 1:30 pm
18th and 25th - Bird Walks in the Rockfish Valley - Guided tour of the Rockfish Valley birding trails. Valley geology history and plants are the showcase. Knowledgeable guides. Rain of shine. 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.  (434) 361-2251 for more info.


24 - Fleetwood Community Center Spring Trail Ride. Fee includes 1 ½ days of beautiful trails to ride, camping, bath facilities and 5 meals.  434-277-5814

24 - Arbor Day Celebration in the Rockfish Valley. Tree planting, bird walk, tree talk and extended trails open. See website for details and map. Bring a picnic lunch and enjoy it along the river. 434-361-2251 
25 - A Night Out with the Hamner Improv Troupe - An evening of Improv. What will they come up with this time? How do you follow bowling with goldfish and scuba-diving mops? 25, 26 - Wintergreen Winery’s 16th Anniversary  Celebration. Toast the winery's anniversary with live music, wine and gourmet food tasting, and door prizes. 2, 9, 16, 23, 30 - Nelson County Farmer's Market is a  producer-only market, featuring live music, fresh local produce, baked goods, fresh cheese, meat & poultry, fine crafts, plants, cut flowers and more...something new every week. Open every Saturday under the big white tent in downtown Nellysford. 8 am – noon.

2 - Spring Star Watch in Rockfish Valley. Bring a picnic to the Rockfish Valley Trail Head and enjoy star observation around 7:30 p.m. For more details see website. 434-361-2251 

2 - Nelson Downriver Canoe & Kayak Race is suitable for experienced paddlers. Our goal is to promote recreation, conservation and sportsmanship through paddling rivers and lakes in and around Nelson County. The race is 8 miles of class I – II+ whitewater and typically takes from 80 to 100 minutes to complete. The race is followed by a social/picnic/awards ceremony. 434-277-8023

9 - Cardinal Point Concert Series. Live music at the winery from 4-8 pm. Attendees are encouraged to bring a picnic and  enjoy the view. 9, 10 - Mother’s Day Weekend Open House at Wintergreen Winery. "Time Out for Mom" Give Mom a time out! Let her relax and enjoy a winery visit complete with complimentary wine tasting and light hors d'oeuvres plus a fresh flower and door prize entry for each Mom. 15-17 - 26th Annual Spring Wildflower Symposium.  In the early spring before the trees are full, the hillsides are warmed by the sun and the wildflowers are in full bloom. Experience this special time at Wintergreen by attending the Spring Wildflower Symposium May 15-17, 2009. Instructors for the weekend include well known botanists, authors, and artists, each prepared with a full weekend of activities and lectures that will reconnect you with nature. 22 - Montebello Spring Trail Ride. Bring your own horse to the Blue Ridge Mountains and ride scenic trails through woodlands, meadows and ridge tops. Fee includes 5 meals and primitive camping. Advance registration required. Benefits the Montebello Volunteer Fire & Rescue.  540-377-2019

23, 24 - “Wine Into Summer” Memorial Weekend Celebration at Wintergreen Winery. Kick off the lazy days of summer with a festive day or two of music, food and fun for all! 23, 24  - The 30th Annual Fiesta de Primavera at Mountain Cove Winery. The oldest single winery festival in Virginia. Celebrate the release of the new wines, with live music, good food, tastings and tours. Scenic, family friendly venue. No pets, please.

30, 31 - Nelson County Folk Life Festival at Pharsalia Plantation. Learn the history and heritage of the early 1800's Pharsalia plantation. Enjoy a day of events that include wine tasting, musical entertainment, food, tradesmen demonstrations and children’s activities. Pharsalia is located in beautiful Nelson County. 10 am – 5 pm Rain or Shine.
